South Georgia State College
Engram Student Success Center
Douglas, GA
In 2010 the College commissioned the design-build partnership of Lord Aeck Sargent and Juneau Construction Company to rehabilitate its 1970 Union Building as the Engram Student Success Center.
Designed to provide a “one stop shop” for student services, the Center combines the offices of Admissions, Registrar, Financial Aid and campus Cashier. The collocation of these offices has helped the College meet its goal of providing more convenient and effective customer service to its students, while improving staff utilization by allowing cross-trained advisors from one department to augment the staff of another during peak periods of service, which vary cyclically from department to department through the academic year.
Flexible meeting rooms, including a large multi-purpose room, provide additional space for processing student applications during peak periods and accommodate campus organizations, seminars and lectures, and special events for both the College and surrounding community throughout the year.
A two-story entry hall provides visual communication between the office and meeting spaces and serves a threshold between the new campus entry to the north and the historic core of the campus to the south. Building on both the Campus Master Plan and the Campus Historic Preservation Plan, the design preserves its architectural character of the original building while providing a new “front door” for the campus.
