City of Douglas
Douglas Downtown Master Plan
Douglas, GA
Since the arrival of the Atlantic Coastline and Georgia Florida railroads in the early 1900s, the City of Douglas’ Downtown has served as an economic and cultural hub for the region.
This role led to a great deal of development throughout the 20th century, much of which is still preserved, as well as the establishment of major regional anchors such as South Georgia State College and the Coffee County Regional Medical Center. Despite maintaining its historic charm and still drawing regional visitors, Downtown Douglas has struggled to maintain the vibrancy and activity that is typically found within a traditional Downtown. However, recent investments by the City along with the revival of Historic Main Streets nationwide presented an opportunity to plan for Downtown’s cultural and economic renewal.
The Downtown Douglas Master Plan is a community-driven study that crafts a vision for a livable and “all-day active” neighborhood and district. The plan emphasizes strategies for social and economic momentum, the reintroduction of housing, preservation of historic assets and the addition of signature civic spaces.
