North Carolina Central University
Campus Master Plan
Durham, NC
Lord Aeck Sargent was selected in 2007 to update the NCCU Campus Master Plan, which was last updated in 2002.
In the intervening five years, the University had experienced significant growth in enrollment, often outpacing the capacity of the 100-acre campus to effectively serve the needs of students, faculty, and administration. The University’s enrollment for the 2006-2007 academic year was 8,500, and was anticipated to grow to 13,500 by 2010. To address the challenges and seize the opportunities presented by such growth, the 2007 Master Plan objectives included the following:
- Provision for student life facilities, including activity centers and residence halls
- Centralization of student services and general academic services
- Development of coherent campus districts to more clearly define Colleges & Schools, promote student and faculty interaction, and facilitate way-finding
- Restoration of existing campus green spaces plazas and development of new ones
- Relocation and expansion of parking and re-routing of vehicular circulation to promote a pedestrian-activated campus core
- Definition of campus edge that is sensitive to needs and concerns of surrounding neighborhoods
- Assessment of need and location for future campus expansion
- Addressing the impact of moving NCCU Athletics from NCAA Division II to NCAA Division I
